CEDS and USAID sign a grant to improve development indicators

Public debates over the success and failures of development have been generally based on some limited types of metrics known to the general public and reported over a broad range of disaggregation.

There are many alternative and useful metrics that have been commonly-used by academics yet have only of limited-use in public discussions and even in the government policy formulation particularly at the regional and local levels. Those indicators in many cases may tell different stories about the success and failures of recent economic development.

CEDS UNPAD has proposed to USAID-SEADI, a project to provide the public with alternative development indicators that can enrich and improve public debate over development outcomes. The project has specific intention to mainstream the use of development indicators that can be disentangled into socio-economic status. The progress of development process, then, is not only reported for the average only, but the progress of all representative and relevant segments of the society can be disclosed and monitored with ease.

Today, The USAID-SEAD large grant for the project titled “Strengthening Institution to Improve Public Debates on the Equity Aspects of Development Outcomes” was formally signed by CEDS director, Dr. Arief Anshory Yusuf and USAID-SEADI chief of party, Dr. Timothy Buehrer at USAID-SEADI headquarter in Jakarta. The grant signing ceremony was witnessed as well by Dr. Kodrat Wibowo, the head of department of economics, Padjadjaran University, and CEDS Deputy Director, Dr. M. Purnagunawan.

In general, the project’s objective is to improve the quality of the public debates and policy-making on the equity aspects of development outcomes, with specific aim (1) to revisit and analyze the long-term and recent trends in the equity-related development outcomes; (2) to improve public awareness on and accessibility to more comprehensive indicators of equity-related of development outcomes; and (3)To strengthen the capacity of CEDS as one of the main institutions in Indonesia that can play a major role in public and policy debates on development issues. In a nutshell, the methods to achieve the aforementioned objectives are through a research on revisiting and analyzing the long-term and recent trends in the equity-related development outcomes; disseminating the findings of the research as research papers; establishing an online dashboard integrated in a website called keberpihakan.org that supply the public with regular streams of comprehensive development outcome indicator that are equity-sensitive, and by doing those activities the capacity of CEDS is also directly strengthened.
